One of our top priorities is helping patients who live with chronic pain. Among the more common conditions we work with is fibromyalgia. If you or someone you love has recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, you understand how important pain management is. This month, our Flower Mound pain and wellness specialists (as well as Bedford and Benbrook clinic specialists) will be sharing information about fibromyalgia and some of the options for effective pain management.
What is Fibromyalgia?
This chronic condition is believed to be a type of interference with the way a person’s brain processes pain signals. It typically leads to long-lasting pain throughout the body. The cause is not currently known. However, factors that may be involved include genetics, certain infections and possibly even emotional trauma.
Fibromyalgia can be challenging to diagnose. However, it is more commonly found in women than in men. Symptoms may include dull [whole-body] pain, fatigue, poor sleep, headaches, difficulty concentrating, irritable bowels, depression and anxiety.
Medication & Treatments
There are several types of treatments that have shown evidence of being successful in helping patients improve their quality of life. Many times, more than one type of treatment will be used simultaneously to achieve better results. The following are examples of some of the more commonly prescribed treatments and medications for fibromyalgia:
- Antidepressants
- Pain Medications (over the counter)
- Antiepileptic Medications
- Muscle Relaxants
- Medical Marijuana
- Acupuncture
- Biofeedback
- Massage therapy
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
If you have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, we encourage you to see a chronic pain specialist. Your Family Medical currently has Flower Mound doctors accepting new patients (as well as at the Bedford and Benbrook locations). They will be able to offer insight and treatment options specifically indicated for your unique symptoms. They will also be able to communicate with the other members of your care team in order to ensure that you are receiving comprehensive care.
Lifestyle Modifications
In addition to medication and comprehensive therapies, there are many ways patients can make a positive impact on their symptoms. These are better known as lifestyle modifications. Lifestyle modifications are simple, small changes made to daily activities and routines which may lead to decreased pain. These changes may also improve a patient’s quality of life, which is another way to manage pain. We recommend several lifestyle modifications to patients who are living with fibromyalgia. The most common of these include:
- getting regular exercise
- reducing overall stress and anxiety
- creating better sleeping habits
- finding community in a local or virtual fibromyalgia support group
- getting the recommended amount of vitamin D
