Regular Screenings & Check-Ups: What Men Need to Know

Mens Health

Did you know that June is Men’s Health Awareness Month? The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to increase awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. Our doctors for men in Benbrook, TX (locations also in Flower Mound & Bedford, TX) at Your Family Medical understand the importance of men prioritizing their health through regular screenings and check-ups to improve overall well-being and detect potential health issues early on.

Regular Check-Ups

Not to call anyone out, but we all probably have a man in our life who refuses to go to the doctor.

Many men tend to overlook regular health check-ups until they are actually experiencing symptoms or health concerns. Getting check-ups and screenings on a regular basis is key to catching health problems in the early stages or before anything becomes serious. By scheduling routine check-ups, men can stay on top of their health and address any potential issues before they get out of hand.

Recommended Screenings and Check-Ups For Men:

  • Blood Pressure Screening: High blood pressure can lead to heart disease and stroke.
  • Cholesterol Level Testing: High cholesterol levels can increase the risk of heart disease. If you are 35 or older, you should be getting checked regularly.
  • Blood Sugar Testing: Diabetes can be genetic, stem from obesity, or derive from your lifestyle.
  • Colorectal Cancer Screening: According to the Centers for Disease Control, starting at age 45, men should consider regular colorectal cancer screening tests such as colonoscopy or stool-based tests.
  • Prostate Health Screening: Men aged 50 and older should discuss prostate cancer screening with their healthcare provider. (Screen earlier if you are African American or have a family history)
  • Skin Exams: Helps to detect skin cancer early.
  • Eye Exam: Helps detect vision problems and early signs of glaucoma.

Lifestyle Factors

Screenings and check-ups aren’t the only things men can do to protect their health. Lifestyle plays a big role in our well-being:

  • Healthy Diet: avoid fast food, incorporate fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins into your diet.
  • Regular Exercise
  • Prioritize rest & sleep
  • Maintain a Healthy Weight
  • Limit Alcohol
  • Quit Smoking
